Kenya is a premier safari destination due to its abundant wildlife, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. Kenya is also a home to over 1,100 bird species, including numerous endemics and migratory species, it’s a haven for both novice and experienced birders. While the savannah parks are home to the Big Five (lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos). When you visit Kenya between July and September, you witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara. During this period, the migration, including millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, typically crosses the Mara River into the Maasai Mara, seeking greener pastures.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic beauty, offering a rewarding safari experience. Expect to see large flocks of flamingos, both black and white rhinos, and other wildlife like Rothschild giraffes and various antelope species. The park also features the soda lake, which attracts the flamingos, and hilly landscapes that provide beautiful viewpoints. 

Lake Baringo

When visiting Lake Baringo, expect stunning scenery, abundant birdlife, and unique cultural experiences. You can enjoy boat safaris on the freshwater lake, spot hippos and crocodiles, and marvel at the diverse bird species, including the Goliath heron.  

Massai Mara

Visiting the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya offers an incredible safari experience. Expect to witness the “Big Five” (lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos) and other iconic African wildlife like giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest. You can also experience the Great Migration, a spectacle of over a million wildebeest and zebras moving across the plains. Beyond wildlife, expect cultural interactions with the Maasai people, including village visits and learning about their traditions. Furthermore, you can enjoy activities like hot air balloon safaris, bush breakfasts, and nature walks.

Samburu National Reserve

When visiting Samburu National Reserve, expect a unique and rewarding safari experience with diverse landscapes, unique wildlife, and rich cultural encounters. You’ll encounter the “Samburu Special Five” (Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx) alongside other iconic African animals like elephants, lions, and leopards. The reserve also boasts a vibrant birdlife with over 450 species.

Safari Itinerary

On this day we shall arrive via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, in Nairobi. This evening, we shall discuss the safari plan and the schedule for the next day. We shall then relax from our long flights and enjoy a cool Nairobi evening at Nairobi Boma.

We shall depart Nairobi and head to Mt. Kenya as we enjoy birds along the way. Here we enjoy birding along local trails seeking montane forest species such as the Mountain Buzzard, Crowned Eagle, Kandt’s Waxbill, Tacazze Sunbird, African Cuckoo-Hawk, Alpine Swift, Purple-throated Cuckoo-Shrike, Grey Cuckoo-Shrike, Mountain Wagtail, Slender-billed Greenbul, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Olive Pigeon, Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon and Oriole Finch. We shall also keep an eye for local monkeys, squirrels and forest antelopes. Accommodation at Mt. Kenya Castle Forest Lodge.

We shall spend the early morning birding in Mt. Kenya as we seek more species from this amazing forest. From here we shall drive North, crossing the Equator line looping around Mt. Kenya to the dry Samburu and Isiolo regions. This afternoon we shall enjoy birding in Samburu as we track species such as African Orange-bellied Parrot, Steel-blue Whydah, Fan-tailed Raven, Bristle-crowned Starling, Ruppell’s Vulture, Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver, Lichtenstein’s Sandgrouse and Pink-breasted Lark. We shall also keep an eye for mammals, such as Leopard, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Cheetah, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Lion and Elephants; Accommodation at Samburu Sopa Lodge.

Today we enjoy a full day of birding game drives exploring Samburu. Expected species include Golden Pipit, Golden-breasted Starling, Abyssinian Scimitarbill, Rosy-patched Bush-shrike, Somali Ostrich, Somali Courser, Black-bellied Sunbird, Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Black-faced Sandgrouse, African Bare-eyed Thrush, Somali Bee-eater, Martial Eagle and Tawny Eagle. We shall also keep an eye for mammals, such as Leopard, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Cheetah, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Lion and Elephants; Accommodation at Samburu Sopa Lodge.

We shall have the morning to enjoy more of the beautiful Samburu landscapes and animals. We shall then drive South, crossing the Equator and head to the town of Nyeri for the night. Here we shall enjoy some birds too and our main target will be the endemic Hinde’s Babbler. Accommodation at Le Pristine Hotel.

We shall then drive North crossing the Equator one more time towards Lake Baringo. Lake Baringo is a fresh water lake in the Northern Rift Valley. We shall search for roadside birds such as Silverbird, Dark Chanting Goshawk, White-bellied Go-away-bird and Knob-billed Duck. In the afternoon, we shall bird around the lake and the scrublands looking for Slender-tailed Nightjar, Heuglin’s Courser, D’Arnaud’s Barbet, Greyish Eagle-Owl, Northern White-faced Scops Owl, Verreaux’s Eagle, Black-throated Barbet, Brubru, Grey-headed Bushshrike and Spotted Thick-knee. Accommodation at Soi Lodge.

We shall enjoy a morning boat ride on Lake Baringo where we seek species such as Northern Carmine Bee-eater, White-faced Whistling Duck, African Jacana, Northern Masked Weaver, Goliath Heron, Black Crake, African Fish Eagle and Northern Red Bishop. We shall then continue our birding in the scrublands around the lake. Here we shall be seeking the local birds such as African Pygmy Kingfisher, Pygmy Batis, Nubian Woodpecker, Little Weaver, Golden-backed Weaver, White-bellied Canary, Beautiful Sunbird, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Pale Prinia, Red-fronted Warbler, Grey Wren Warbler, Jackson’s Hornbill, Hemprich’s Hornbill and Brown-tailed Rock Chat; Accommodation at Soi Lodge.

We embark on our drive again towards Lake Nakuru – a saltwater lake in the Rift Valley. On the way, we shall enjoy more roadside birding, seeking species such as Black-headed Oriole, Rufous-naped Lark, Long-tailed Widowbird, Slender-billed Starling. At Lake Nakuru we can see Lesser Flamingo, Greater Flamingo, Anteater Chat, Pied Avocet, Coqui Francolin, African Cuckoo, Cape Teal, Kittlitz’s Plover, Stout Cisticola, Red-fronted Barbet, Little Rock-Thrush and Mocking Cliff Chat. Mammals here include Thompson’s Gazelle, Grant’s Gazelle, Leopard, Black Rhino, White Rhino, Rothschild’s Giraffe, African Buffalo and Lions. Accommodation at Lake Nakuru Lodge

Masai Mara: This reserve hosts a great number of birds i.e Black-bellied Bustard, Secretarybird, Black-chested Snake-Eagle, Martial Eagle, Schalow’s Turaco, Northern Black Flycatcher, Rattling Cisticola, Athi Short-toed Lark, Usambiro Barbet, Red winged Francolin and Grey-capped Social-Weaver. Mammals include Black Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Spotted Hyena, Savannah Elephant, Common Impala, Thompson’s Gazelle, African Buffalo, Serval, Nile Hippo, Topi and Blue Wildebeest; Accommodation at Sentrim Camp

We shall enjoy breakfast at the lodge then embark on our journey back to Nairobi city, as we cruise across the beautiful countryside. We shall then take an airport transfer for our international flights home, marking the end to our amazing safari. If your flight is later in the night, the afternoon will be spent visiting the Giraffe Centre and then enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant.
