Nyungwe National Park and Akagera National Park are Rwanda’s two most important birding sites, but they reward different priorities. Nyungwe is the place to go for Albertine Rift endemics and montane rainforest specialists – it holds all but one of the region’s 29 endemics. Akagera is the place to go for savannah, wetland and lakeshore species, including the Shoebill and Papyrus Gonolek, alongside Big Five game viewing. Most serious birders visit both.

## Choose Nyungwe if…
You’re specifically targeting Albertine Rift endemics, you want serious forest birding, or you’re combining your trip with chimpanzee trekking. This is the priority park for anyone building a birding-first Rwanda itinerary.
## Choose Akagera if…
You want a broader wildlife experience alongside birding — Akagera pairs birding with Big Five game drives and boat trips, and its wetlands and lakeshore habitats produce a very different species list from Nyungwe’s forest interior.
## Do both
