What is the best time to visit Rwanda for birding?

Rwanda is a year-round birding destination because most of its birds are resident rather than migratory. October and November are considered peak season, when Palearctic migrants have arrived, intra-African migrants are present, and resident species are in breeding plumage. June to September (the dry season) offers easier trail conditions, making it ideal for combining birding with gorilla trekking. March to May is the green season, with lush habitat and excellent forest birding in Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park.

Do I need to time my trip around migratory birds?

No. Because the Albertine Rift endemics and most of Rwanda's headline species are resident year-round, a trip can be planned around convenience, weather, and combining birding with gorilla trekking rather than around migration windows.

Is the rainy season bad for birding in Rwanda?

Rain can make forest trails muddier and photography conditions more challenging, but it is not a bad time for birding. The wetter months bring lush vegetation and active breeding behavior in many species, and Nyungwe's forest birding remains productive throughout the year.
