Rwanda offers access to 29 of the roughly 40+ Albertine Rift endemic bird species — birds found only in the mountain forests straddling Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, eastern DR Congo and western Tanzania. Nyungwe National Park is the single best site in the world to see them, hosting all but one of the region’s endemics. Volcanoes National Park adds 17 more, including one species found nowhere else in Rwanda.
## What “Albertine Rift endemic” means
The Albertine Rift is the western branch of the East African Rift Valley, running from western Uganda through Rwanda to eastern DR Congo. Its high-altitude forests (generally above 1,700–1,800m) are one of Africa’s richest biodiversity zones. Birds classified as Albertine Rift endemics live only within this narrow mountain-forest belt and are found nowhere else on the planet — making them the single biggest draw for serious birders visiting Rwanda.

– **Nyungwe National Park** is the priority site — it holds the largest concentration of Albertine Rift endemics anywhere in the region, in a single accessible rainforest.
– **Volcanoes National Park** adds 17 Albertine Rift endemics on top of its famous mountain gorilla trekking, including the Scarlet-tufted Sunbird, which isn’t reliably found anywhere else in Rwanda.
– Serious endemic-hunters typically combine both parks in one trip.
