Located in north-west of Rwanda, 2 hours drive from Kigali, Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) border Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The national park is best known as a haven for the Mountain Gorilla Gorilla beringei beringei (CR). It is also a home of Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti : EN) and Elephant (Loxodonta africana: EN). Other animals of interest are Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer), Black-fronted Duiker and Bushbuck.
Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed, easily accessible and among the highest in Africa, beckoning an ascent. The bustling market town of Ruhengeri has memorable sites at the base of the Virungas. On the outskirts of town, the natural bridge at Musanze – a solidified lava flow is a fascinating relic of the volcanic activity that shaped this scenic area.
Also within an easy day tripping distance of Ruhengeri there are seldom visit but lovely Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Karago.
Ruhengeri offers good selection of reasonable price, small hotels and guest houses, including the newly renovated hotels La Palme Hotel , Ishema Hotel and Centre Pastoral de Fatima. Visitors can also stay in Gisenyi or Kigali for an early day trip to the Park des Volcans and Ruhengeri
