SIX DAYS GORILLA TRACKING AND WILDLIFE GAME DRIVING IN UGANDA

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Hotel in Kampala/Entebbe

On the arrival at Entebbe Airport our driver-guide transfers you to the accommodation at Bandas of Uganda Wildlife Educational Center.

Day 2: Shoebill tracking at Mabamba and transfer to Kibale

After breakfast, we head to Mabamba Wetlands in Entebbe targeting the Shoebill. We ensure the observation of this famed Stork with local canoes. After lunch we head to Kibale National Park, a 7 hours journey. Our accommodation is at Kibale Guest Cottages.

Lake Kivu

lake-kivu-kigali-rwandaThe western of the country is covered by Lake Kivu a physical border separating Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes with three main parts which are Gisenyi (North) Kibuye (Central) and Cyangugu (South). The Northern shore of lake, on which Goma and Gisenyi lie, is a flat plain featuring lava formations from the eruptions of nearby Nyiragongo Volcanoes.

Mukura Forest

Mukura Forest Reserve is one of Rwanda’s Afro-mountain forests and is found in the western side of Nile-Congo crest, in the western side of the country. The reserve is located in 1 hour drive from Kibuye city and 3 hours from Kigali city. The reserve was gazzeted as national reserve area in 1951 with 3000 ha. The forest is one of the remaining mountain forests with 7 Albertine Rift Endemic bird species and 2 species listed on IUCN threatened species: Grauer’s Rush Warbler (EN) and Kivu Ground Thrush (VU).

Nyungwe National Park

nyungwe-national-park-rwandaIt is a park extending for 1,000 square kilometres across the majestic hills of south east of Rwanda, 1 hour drive from Butare city, Nyungwe National Park is the largest block of mountain forest in East or Central Africa, and one of the most ancient, dating back before the last Ice Age. A uniquely rich centre of floral diversity, the forest has more than 200 different types of tree, and a myriad of flowering plants including the other-worldly giant lobelia and a host of colourful orchids.

Gishwati Forest Reserve

gishwati-forest-reserveGishwati forest is located in North-west part of Rwanda, in the Albertine Rift region, the forest constituted the relic of the ombrophyllous mountain forests. Beside different threats that the forest is facing, Gishwati remains among the richest forest in terms of biodiversity.

Rugezi Marsh

rugezi-landscape-kigaliThe main swamps in Rwanda are Akanyaru on the border of Burundi, Mugesera-Rwero in the south east, Kagera swamps along the Tanzania border in the east, Nyabarongo and the Rugezi wetlands in the north. Wetlands are mainly composed by papyrus and harbors the CITES listed mammal “Statunga” and wetlands dependents bird species like Papyrus Gonolec, Madagascar Squaco Heron and many species of Cisticolas and Weavers.  Lakes is home of many species such as Kingfishers, Storks, Ducks, Egrets, Ducks, Jacanas, Cormorants and Pelicans.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes-National-Park-RwandaLocated in north-west of Rwanda, 2 hours drive from Kigali, Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) border Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The national park is best known as a haven for the Mountain Gorilla Gorilla beringei beringei (CR). It is also a home of Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti : EN) and Elephant (Loxodonta africana: EN). Other animals of interest are Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer), Black-fronted Duiker and Bushbuck.

Akagera National Park

akagera-national-parkThe Akagera National Park (ANP) is located in the East of Rwanda, in less than 2 hours drive of Kigali city, along the border within Tanzania. The altitude varies between 1300 and 1825 metres above the sea level with the highest point at Mount Mutumba (1,825 m). The topography of the park is characterized by rolling sandstone hills in the west, cut in places by deep, narrow valleys. The vegetation of the park is extremely varied and, indeed, has been described as the most heterogeneous savannah ecosystem and habitat in the region with open savannas, flood-plain vegetation, swamps and lakes, river valley, etc.
